our roots
In 1976, at the age of 16, Holly Bower opened her bakery on Lopez Island. With the help of many hands, she churned our croissants and cinnamon rolls, fruit scones and morning glory muffins, beautiful breads and her signature almond butterhorns. It was impossible to walk by the bakery and not be lured by the scent of cinnamon, butter, and yeast.
In 2016, after 39 years Holly passed her rolling pin to pastry chef and new owner, Stephanie Smith. Stephanie brought new recipes and flavors to the bakery like a savory cauliflower cake, tahini cookies, and pistachio shortbread. She also developed recipes using flour grown and milled in the Skagit Valley.
At the end of 2024, Stephanie passed the rolling pin along again. New owner Margot Case and pastry chef Jeric Smith look forward to adding more new flavors to the bakery’s menu and welcoming the community for the island greetings, delicious treats, and warm gatherings the bakery has offered for nearly 50 years.
